FACT: With a 113 octane rating, ethanol is the highest performance fuel on the
market and keeps today's high-compression engines running smoothly.
FACT: Ethanol-blended fuel keeps your fuel system clean for optimal performance
because it does not leave gummy deposits.
FACT: Ethanol-blended fuels are approved under the warranties of all auto
manufacturers marketing vehicles in the U.S. Some even recommend ethanol use for
its clean burning benefits.
Ethanol
Ethanol is an alcohol made from renewable resources like corn and wheat. Grains
are processed with enzymes and the "mash" is distilled to produce a high quality
alcohol. Fuel grade ethanol is about 99% pure alcohol and has a number of
important properties to it that make it an excellent fuel additive for your car.
Ethanol is a clean burning fuel that contains a high percentage (35%) of oxygen
that encourages a more complete combustion of your car's fuel thereby reducing
harmful emissions. More importantly, ethanol is renewable.
Low ethanol blends such as B5 can be used in your vehicle’s gasoline engine with
no modification.
The increased use of renewable fuels will reduce smog and green house gas
emissions. Renewable fuels such as ethanol are one of the best tools we have to
fight air pollution from vehicles. Ethanol contains 35% oxygen. Adding oxygen to
fuel results in more complete fuel combustion, thus reducing harmful tailpipe
emissions. Gasoline containing a 10% ethanol blend will reduce smog generating
emissions like carbon monoxide (25-30%), particulate matter (50%) and volatile
organic compounds (7%). Ethanol can be used in place of harmful aromatics like
benzene – the most toxic compound in gasoline. In addition, ethanol does not
contain sulfur.
The Canadian government estimates that, “If 35
percent of gasoline in Canada contained ten percent ethanol, GHG emissions would
be reduced by 1.8 mega tonnes per year (1.8 million tonnes), which is the
equivalent of removing more than 400,000 vehicles from the road.” The American
Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago credits ethanol-blended reformulated
gasoline with reducing smog-forming emissions by 25% since 1990.
