What are the benefits of using biodiesel?

1. Biodiesel is made from renewable resources and reduces our dependence on fossil fuels.

2. Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas emissions such as CO2 are reduced up to 78% for pure biodiesel.

3. Higher lubricity rating – a 2% blend of biodiesel increases the lubricity of petro-diesel by 65%. This is especially important with the Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel now in use in Canada.

4. Biodiesel is biodegradable and under normal conditions breaks down in 14 to 30 days.

5. Unlike diesel, Biodiesel is non-toxic – it is currently used in mines and ecologically sensitive national parks.

6. Higher cetane rating than diesel, resulting in improved combustibility, smoother engine running and quieter operation

Biodiesel Basics

Millennium Biodiesel is proud to supply premium quality blends of biodiesel produced by two of the top biodiesel manufacturers in North America. Our biodiesel is produced from 100% vegetable oils and meet ASTM D6751 and CGSB-3.520 (B1-B5) specification.

At current (Jan/07) prices, our clear B20 biodiesel blend is priced LOWER than most retail pumps in British Columbia. Please Contact Us for more details.

What is Biodiesel?

Biodiesel is a clean-burning, renewable fuel made from vegetable oil, animal fats or recycled cooking oil. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend (B5 for example is 5% biodiesel, 95% petro-diesel). Biodiesel can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with no major modifications. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, non-toxic and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics.

Can I use biodiesel in my existing diesel engine?

Biodiesel blends of B20 and below work in any diesel engine with no modifications to the engine or the fuel system. These blends provide similar horsepower, torque and mileage as regular diesel. When using blends higher than B20 in extreme cold weather applications (-20˚C and below), certain cold flow additives may be necessary (see Performance and Warranty section for details).

Global Production and Utilization

Biodiesel use is rapidly increasing in Canada and around the world. According to the National Biodiesel Board, the United States produced around 300 million liters of neat (pure) biodiesel in 2005, up from 100 million liters in 2004. Europe currently produces billions of liters per year, with Germany alone producing 1.1 billion liters in 2004.

In BC, biodiesel is not yet easily accessible to the general public, but distribution in rapidly increasing. The municipalities of Vancouver, Whistler, North Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond and Delta have agreed to purchase up to 80 million liters of biodiesel over a 5 year period for use in their fleets. Many other municipalities and private companies have already incorporated blends of B5 and B20 into their daily operations.
